Faceted navigation SEO means I turn the filter combinations people actually search for into standalone pages that rank in Google, and close all other combinations so they don’t eat your crawl budget. “Black leather sofa”, “kids’ shoes size 30” or “Bosch cordless drill” are searched by thousands of people a month, and most online stores have no page for them even though they sell the products. WooCommerce and Shoptet. From €690.

Why store filters are both an SEO problem and an opportunity?
Every filter creates a new URL. Ten filters and a hundred values make millions of combinations, of which maybe fifty make sense. If they’re all indexable, Google gets lost in them. If they’re all closed, you miss the most specific buying searches. This is what I see on online stores most often:
Everything is indexed
Thousands of URLs like ?color=black&size=42&sort=price. Duplicates, thin pages and crawl budget wasted on nonsense.
Everything is closed
Safe, but 900 people a month search for “black leather sofas” and you have no page that could rank for it.
Canonical to the category
The filtered page has a canonical pointing to the whole category, so Google never shows it, even if it’s the best result.
Filters without text or title
The page exists, but it has the category’s title and no H1 or text of its own. To Google it’s a duplicate.
JavaScript-only filters
Filtering without a URL change or only via AJAX. Nice for users, invisible to Google.
Pagination times filters
Every filter combination also has 20 pages. The pagination problem multiplies.
What others get wrong: they either leave filters completely open because “Google will figure it out”, or block them all in robots.txt and lose the best buying searches. The right answer is selection: a few dozen combinations as full pages, the rest closed.
What I do for faceted navigation SEO
Search demand analysis
Which category + attribute combinations people search for (color, material, brand, size) and how often. From keyword research, not gut feeling.
Filter inventory
Which filters the store generates, which URLs are indexed and how much crawl budget they consume.
Strategy
A table: which combinations become indexable pages, which get noindex, which are blocked in robots.txt and which only get a canonical.
Landing pages
For the selected combinations: their own URL, H1, title, meta description and a short text, so each is a full page, not a duplicate.
Indexing setup
Noindex, canonicals and robots.txt for the remaining combinations, sorting and pagination parameters.
Internal links
Links to the new pages from categories, menus or “popular picks” so Google finds them and passes them strength.
Sitemap and Search Console
New pages in the sitemap, indexing requests, and checking that closed URLs drop out of the index.
60-day review
Which new pages are showing, for which queries, and what to fine-tune.
The videos are in Slovak; YouTube can show automatic English subtitles.

How it works
Data first, then setup, then review. I never start by closing or opening everything. First I know what people search for and what Google crawls today.
1
Analysis (week 1). Admin and Search Console access, search demand analysis of combinations, filter and index inventory.
2
Setup (weeks 2 to 3). Strategy for your approval, landing pages, noindex, canonicals, robots.txt, internal links and sitemap.
3
Review (after 60 days). Impressions and clicks of the new pages, closed URLs dropping out of the index, fine-tuning.

Frequently asked questions about store filters and SEO
Should store filters be indexed?
Not all of them. It only makes sense to index combinations people search for and that have enough products (for example “black leather sofas”). Other combinations, sorting and filter pagination should be closed with noindex, canonicals or robots.txt.
How much does faceted navigation SEO cost?
A store with up to approx. 50 categories €690 with 10 landing pages, a larger store €1,490 with 30 pages. Additional pages €29 each. Prices are final; we are not VAT registered.
Which is better: noindex or robots.txt?
With noindex Google crawls the page but doesn’t show it. Robots.txt blocks crawling entirely, saving crawl budget, but the page can stay in the index without content. For filters they’re often combined, depending on what’s already indexed.
Does it work on Shoptet?
Yes, with limitations depending on the theme. Shoptet has its own filter indexing settings; landing pages for combinations are often handled via subcategories or tags. Anything not possible in the admin goes to you as a brief.
How many filter landing pages do I need?
As many as there are combinations with real search demand and enough products. For a smaller store 10 to 20, for a large one hundreds. We start with the highest-demand ones.
When will the new filter pages show results?
First impressions usually within 2 to 6 weeks, clicks and orders within 2 to 3 months. It depends on domain strength and internal links.
Won’t this create duplicates of categories?
No, as long as each landing page has its own title, H1, text and its own search intent. That’s exactly why only combinations people search for differently from the whole category are selected.
